Viewpoints AI is a participatory interactive art installation that uses digital shadow play as a medium for participants to dance, play, and improvise movement with a life-size artificially intelligent virtual character named VAI. VAI is a curious elemental being composed of motes of light that encourages viewers to walk up to the installation and dance with it. When people dance in rhythm to the music playing, VAI responds with its own moves. Behind the scenes, the system employs a formalization of a movement theory called Viewpoints to analyze a dancer’s movements, select how to respond to those movements, and exactly what movements to respond with. VAI is constantly watching its dance partners and learning how to dance from them. So what are you waiting for? Get up and dance!
